For the month of September, we recommend a short loop from Stainforth, taking in the hidden gem that is Catrigg Force – the namesake of one of our Glamping pods.

Where to wander this month: Stainforth & Catrigg Force

The details: 

Distance:  2 miles ( 3km) circular.

Approx. Time: a minimum of 1 hour.

Terrain: This is a moderate walk with a number of stiles to cross. The woodland footpath can be slippy and there are some steep climbs/descents.

Important info:  Please take care on roads and access tracks. It is likely that livestock, including cattle, will be encountered along this route. Remember to follow the countryside code and to prepare for all weather conditions.

The route: The route begins at Stainforth car park, BD24 9PF. This circular route climbs up a limestone stairway through the woodland above Stainforth Scar, providing views up Ribblesdale. Continuing the route you will be rewarded with panoramic views of the Yorkshire Three Peaks before taking a short detour to Catrigg Force, a hidden gem that lies deep in a wooded gorge.

On your return to Stainforth there are toilets in the car park, and a pub in Stainforth. For more refreshment options, Settle is just 2 miles away.

For the month of August, we suggest a linear walk from Horton in Ribblesdale to Settle. The route follows part of the ‘Ribble Way’, which is a long distance trail following the curves of the river Ribble.

Where to wander this month: Horton to Settle

The details: 

Distance:  6.8 miles ( 10.9km) linear

Approx. Time: a minimum of 3.5 hours

Terrain: Relatively easy walking on variable terrain.

Important info:  Please take care on roads and access tracks. It is likely that livestock, including cattle, will be encountered along this route. Remember to follow the countryside code and to prepare for all weather conditions. The route follows sections by and crossing the river and railway, so please take extra care in these areas.

The route: The route starts from Horton in Ribblesdale and is a linear walk to Settle, we would therefore suggest parking in Settle, and taking the train to Horton to begin the walk. There are toilets and refreshments available in both Horton and Settle, and in Stainforth during the walk.

Known as the little zoo with loads to do, the Lakeland Wildlife Oasis near jct35 of the M6 is home to over 100 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates. With lush indoor tropical halls, walkthrough enclosures and picturesque outdoor spaces, this zoo is great fun whatever the weather!

For the month of July, we have picked Whernside, a walk to the highest point in Yorkshire. The tallest of the famous Yorkshire 3 peaks, a long steady climb rewards you with stunning views across the valley towards Ingleborough & Pen-y-ghent.

Where to wander this month: Whernside

The details: 

Distance:  7.5 miles ( 12.5km) circular

Approx. Time: 3 – 4 .5 hours

Terrain: Mostly fields and paths. Some rocky terrain. Steady ascent and steeper descent.

Important info:  Please take care on roads and access tracks. It is likely that livestock, including cattle, will be encountered along this route. Remember to follow the countryside code and to prepare for all weather conditions.

The route: The route starts from Ribblehead Viaduct (LA6 3AS), which is a 26 minute drive from Riverside. “The ascent of Whernside involves a long steady climb and a lovely high-level ridge. The descent is stteper with a final flat section through the fields to finished underneath the spectacular Ribblehead viaduct. Make sure you are suitably equipped – remember as you go higher it gets colder & windier.”

For the month of June, how about a turn around Stocks Reservoir, located at Gisburn Forest. This 8 mile moderate walk circles the reservoir with views of the water and the wild forest of Bowland landscapes.

Distance:  8 miles ( 13km) circular

Approx. Time: 3 – 4 hours

Terrain: Mostly fields and paths, historic trackways. Moderate gradients.

Important info:  Please take care on roads and access tracks. It is likely that livestock, including cattle, will be encountered along this route. Remember to follow the countryside code and to prepare for all weather conditions.

The route: The route starts from the Stocks Reservoir Car Park (BB7 4TS), which is a 28 minute drive from Riverside. There are Wildlife hides along the first section where you can see some of the forest’s extensive wildlife.  There are toilets and a cafe nearby at Gisburn Forest Hub.

If you go down in the woods today, you’re sure of a blue surprise – late April and the start of May is the perfect time for woodland walks filled with carpets of bluebells! 

Where to wander this month: Local Bluebell walks 

The details: 

There are a number of stunning walks nearby that feature stunning carpets of bluebells through the end of April and start of May.

The routes:

Oxenber Woods – A firm favourite with the staff at Riverside, Oxenber Woods between Austwick & Feizor feature a stunning display of bluebells each year, stretching as far as the eye can see.

Roeburndale Woods – One for the more seasoned hiker, this steep valley loop takes in some of the most important areas of ancient semi-natural woodland in Lancashire.

Bowtham Wood loop from Bentham – Part of the heritage trail that starts just outside of the park entrance, this 5 mile loop follows the river Wenning.

Rigmaden Bluebells – This moderate walk is a favourite of Bentham Footpath Group, even if you miss the peak of bluebell season, this still promises to be a nice walk.

A self guided walking trail taking in the sights and sounds of Morecambe’s famous seafront, from the iconic Midland hotel to the Lakeland Panorama, and no visit to Morecambe would be complete without a picture with the Eric Morecambe statue!

The route: The beauty of this self-guided wander along the prom is that you can follow the full route on the map, or pick & choose which landmarks you would like to visit.

There are plenty of fabulous places to grab a drink or bite to eat along the way, and lots of car parking options, or you could even jump on the train from Bentham!
